AI optimization: the checklist to get your site read, understood and recommended

AI optimization is the set of changes that let assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini read your site, understand what you sell and have a reason to recommend your brand.

Why the order matters

The best copy in your market is useless if the assistant's crawler cannot open the page. And being read is useless if the text does not say what you sell. Each axis depends on the previous one: an access problem breaks everything, and a preference problem only matters once the first two are solved.

Axis 1 — Access

The goal: any assistant that fetches your site can read the content.

  • robots.txt allows the assistants' search crawlers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Google).
  • No firewall, CDN or security plugin blocks unknown bots by default.
  • The main text is in the HTML and does not depend on JavaScript to appear.
  • Important pages respond quickly and without errors.
  • There is an up-to-date sitemap.xml.
  • There is an /llms.txt summarizing the company and its main pages.

A quick test: open yourdomain.com/robots.txt in a browser and look for Disallow: / applied to all agents. Then open your homepage with JavaScript turned off: what is left is what many crawlers see.

Axis 2 — Clarity

The goal: the assistant can sum up the company in one correct sentence.

  • The top of the homepage says what the company does, for whom and where.
  • Each important service or product has its own page with a clear name.
  • There is concrete information: price ranges or pricing model, turnaround, regions, industries served.
  • An FAQ page answers the real questions buyers ask.
  • Headings describe the content instead of generic taglines.
  • The brand's name, category and description match across the site, profiles and directories.
  • Structured data (Organization or LocalBusiness, FAQPage) matches the visible text.

A useful test: ask an assistant "what does the company [your domain] do?". If the answer is vague or wrong, the site is not saying it clearly.

Axis 3 — Preference

The goal: among several options, the assistant has reasons to cite yours.

  • Verifiable proof: case studies, results, clients, certifications, years in business.
  • Reviews on the platforms that matter in your industry.
  • Honest comparisons: when you are the best choice, and for whom you are not.
  • Mentions on the third-party sites assistants tend to open in your market: lists, associations, press, directories.
  • Content for comparison and decision questions, not only discovery.

Reputation is part of this axis. If assistants describe your brand with outdated or negative information, that is what they repeat.

What usually pays off first

What you findFirst action
AI crawlers blocked in robots.txtAllow the search crawlers — often a single line
Generic homepageRewrite the top of the page with what you do and for whom
All services on one pageCreate one page per main service
No proof on the sitePublish two or three case studies with concrete results
Brand described with wrong factsFix the information at the source: site, profiles and directories

Optimization is ongoing

Assistants change models, sources and criteria often. An optimization done well today needs to be checked again in a few weeks — on the site and in the answers.

How PlaceFirstAI helps

The free diagnosis reads your site and returns the readiness score split across the three axes — Access, Clarity and Preference —, how many points there are to work on and the fastest win. On the Growth plan, each point comes with step-by-step instructions, organized into a 90-day plan, and monitoring confirms every 15 days whether the changes got your brand into the answers.
