AI visibility: what it is and how your brand gets into the answers

AI visibility is the chance that your brand is cited when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity. Here is what decides that citation and how to measure it.

Why this became a subject now

For twenty years, showing up meant ranking. A buyer typed a search, got ten links and chose. In conversations with assistants that step disappears: the person describes the problem in plain language — "which practice management software works for a small clinic?" — and gets a finished answer, usually with three or four names.

That changes the math in two ways:

  • The list is short. There is no "page 2" of an answer. Either your brand is among the few names cited, or it is not.
  • The decision starts before the click. Someone who reaches your site from an assistant arrives with an opinion already shaped by the answer. Someone who does not arrive never learned you existed.

AI visibility is not the same as SEO

SEO is still the foundation: a site search engines cannot crawl is also poorly read by assistants. But the two measure different outcomes.

A site can rank well on Google and still not be cited when someone asks an assistant "what is the best option for...". The reverse happens too, which is why the two are worth measuring separately. The difference between SEO, AEO and AGEO is covered in this article.

The three axes that decide whether a brand is cited

1. Access: can the AI read your site?

Each assistant uses its own crawlers to fetch pages, and companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity and Google publish their names. If robots.txt blocks one of them, if the content only appears after JavaScript runs, or if the page fails, that assistant answers without your site.

2. Clarity: does it understand what you sell?

Assistants summarize. If your homepage says "innovative solutions for your business", there is nothing to summarize. Pages that state plainly what the company does, for whom, where it operates and how it charges become quotable sentences.

3. Preference: does it have a reason to choose you?

Among several brands that do the same thing, assistants tend to cite the ones with more evidence: reviews, case studies, comparisons, mentions on other sites, concrete data. Reputation counts — what the AI says about the brand matters as much as whether it cites it.

How to measure AI visibility

Two numbers are worth tracking, and they answer different questions:

  1. Site readiness — how prepared your site is to be read, understood and preferred. This is what you can fix directly. PlaceFirstAI sums it up in a 0–100 score, explained in AI Visibility Score.
  2. Mention rate — in how many of your market's buying questions the brand actually appears, per assistant. This is the outcome. Since answers vary from one run to the next, it only makes sense when measured repeatedly.

Measuring only the second shows the symptom without the cause. Measuring only the first shows the cause without confirming the effect.

Three common mistakes

  • Blocking AI crawlers without noticing. Many security plugins and CDNs block unknown bots by default. Check robots.txt and your firewall before anything else.
  • Writing to impress instead of to be understood. Slogans do not become citations. Clear sentences about what you do do.
  • Treating it as a one-off project. Assistants change sources, models and criteria. What showed up this month can disappear next month.

Where to start

  1. Check that your robots.txt allows the assistants' search crawlers.
  2. Rewrite the top of your homepage to say, without metaphors, what the company does and for whom.
  3. List the ten questions a buyer would ask before knowing you, and check whether your site answers each one.
  4. Measure. The free diagnosis shows the readiness score across the three axes, which AI crawlers can read your site and the fastest win. The Growth plan tracks your brand's presence in four assistants every 15 days.
